Plato wrote Crito, a dialogue in which the main character, Socrates, followed what he argued to be his duty to be executed when the state sentenced him to death.
Found guilty by a jury of 500 citizens who charged him with corrupting the youth in 403 BCE, the ancient greek philosopher Socrates chose execution despite having the opportunity to escape.
JS Mill came up with the Utilitarian theory of ethics, which says that one should act to ensure the greatest good for the greatest number.
